Retailers React to CA Violent Gaming Legislation

Hal Halpin, president of the Interactive Entertainment Merchants
Association released a statement today calling California assemblyman
Leland Yee irresponsible and looking to garner a moral high ground
among the public. Yee is calling for legislation that give the
government control in sales of violent or otherwise mature rated video
games.

The IEMA, a non profit U.S. trade association has
already implemented their own plans to inhibit the sale of M-Rated
games to minors and feels this legistaltion push is a waste of taxpayer
time and money. “The newly proposed violent video game legislation in
California smacks of me-too politics…retailers have (already) made
the public commitment to partner with parents, and quite frankly you
simply cannot legislate sound parenting.”

Halpin explains that
Yee and others like him area perfectly aware of the initiative by the
IEMA but still choose to ignore the efforts, instead choosing to
“pursue a legislative course proven unconstitutional time and again.”
