Marvel Films Comic-Con Announcements

After 16 films based on the established characters, Marvel Comics recently formed their own studios and this year’s Comic-Con revealed several questions for movie goers and fans alike.

Ant Man

In the coming years, Marvel FIlm Studios is promising films bases on 6 of their super heros: Captain America, Thor, Nick Fury, The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man and Ant Man. Edgar Wright, best known for directing Shaun of the Dead, is heading up Ant Man, certainly not one of the most well known super heros Ant Man (the film iteration) follows Scott Lang, an electrical engineer turned burglar who steals the special suit and gas canisters from the aging Henry Pym, the original Ant Man. Wright spoke of the his intention for the film; “Althugh there will be some comedic element to it” this will be more of “an action movie with the Incredible Shrinking Man.”

On a side note, Wright was asked about a special edition DVD for Shaun of the Dead. Wright responded that he felt doing another disc would be “kind if a rip off” becuase there just isn’t any more material to put on another disc.

The Incredible Hulk

Despite the low critical response, Marvel confirmed a sequel to The Hulk, tentatively titled The Incredible Hulk. French Director Louis Leterrier has been hired to fill the directors chair. Leterrier promised an action adventure story that would get back to the comic book and tv show roots. Producer Avi Arad added this film would be a “guy on the road, struggling with his curse, more like the television show.” “Frankenstein meets Jekyll and Hyde with a little Edward Scissor Hands” was Leterrier’s description of his vision. Though no cast was announced, Lou Ferrigno apparently approached Leterrier. The director invited con-goers down to Marvels booth if they wanted to “see Lou Ferrigno beg a French man”. Finally, the villain? Abomination.

Iron Man

Finally, actor/director Jon Favreau too the panel to talk about the recently announced and much anticipated Iron Man movie. Comic artist Adi Granov has been hired to guide the look of the film and the design of the armor. Favreau mentioned starting with the gray suit and eventually moving to a suit remeniscent to the design of War Machine. Favreau admitted that he hates computer effects, but didn’t see any way to do this film without them. That said, he emphasized the importance of not letting the camera fly away with the effects: “You have to treat something fake as if it were real”. So who will Iron Man be facing off against? The Mandarin.

Christopher Kirkman

Christopher is an old school nerd: designer, animator, code monkey, writer, gamer and Star Wars geek. As owner and Editor-In-Chief of Media Geeks, he takes playing games and watching movies very seriously. You know, in between naps.
