Quantum Leap: Season 1

Well it’s been many years that I & fellow Quantum Leap fans have been wait for this box set. A few years after DVD started to be embraced by the public, Universal released the Quantum Leap DVD of the pilot episode only. I’m not sure about the other fans, but this wasn’t enough for me. Luckily, as more TV series have been but to DVD, Universal revisited the series & put the entire first season into a nice little box set.

As with TV series of the late 80’s/early 90’s, we get a clean crisp 4:3 video. Although it’s a fairly clean transfer, the effect of Al’s hologram shows its age in some scenes. The colors remain vibrant & only a very small amount of pixels seemed off in the transfer. Overall, the video from the DVD has nothing to complain about. Again, due to the series going from March’89 to May’93, you’re not gonna get much more than stereo.

Extras however are the only thing that come into question. On the first disc, fans are given a entertaining & informative featurette mostly consisting of Scott Bakula (StarTrek:Enterprise, American Beauty), Dean Stockwell (Married to the Mob, Dune) & Donald Bellisario (creator of Magnum P.I, Airwolf, & JAG) intermixed with scenes from the show they were talking about. In addition to the featurette, each episode has an optional introduction from Scott Bakula. Unfortunetly, thats where the extra stop. A longer featurette would’ve been nice, perhaps commentary from the Scott, Dean & Donald, but I digress.

Compared to the pilot episode only DVD that they released years ago, this is an improvement. However, the limited extras is the only negative. If you’re a fan of the show & await the next 4 seasons, then by all means go out & get this set. If you’re not a fan, rent it, but beweare. By the last episode of the season, you may be hooked like we were/are.
