Win A Date With Tad Hamilton

Sounds like a reality show. I hate reality shows. They aren’t real. They portray what we wish were real and seduce those viewers that would rather not invest in their own realities. Fortunately, this was not a movie about reality shows, or a movie that billed itself as a reality show.

Instead, this is a chick flick, the next best thing. Win A Date… plays out as a formulaic ‘teen’ movie, only without the teens. Kate Bosworth is Rosalee Futch, a small town Virginia 20-something who enters a contest in order to win a date with her favorite movie star Tad Hamilton, plated by Josh Duhamel. Rosalee works at the local grocery store, where her manager and best friend Pete (Topher Grace) secretly pines for her love. Does anyone see where this is going? Tad begins seeing the err of his indulgent Hollywood life, Rosalee begins to fall in love with the hearthrob and Pete learns he needs to confess his love before losing Rosalee forever.

It is still beyond me why women love these kind of romantic semi-comedies. I’m not one to judge however (haw haw). There were a few light moments that pulled a laugh from my gut. It wasn’t all bad, but it still had me wondering if the 96 minute runtime was over with every ten minutes or so. I guess one could say it was ‘cute’, and compared to his TV costars’ film endeavors, I can see that Topher may have a brighter big screen future than that of the other That 70’s Show actors. One word of advice though Topher, don’t be a Ben Stiller and play the same character. I’ll forgive the fact that this character is essentially your TV persona, but only because of your role in Mona Lisa Smile.
