LucasArts Adds Classic Titles to Steam

We’d heard a rumor this weekend that LucasArts would be making a major announcement Monday morning regarding an older franchise and speculation began. Personally, I was hoping for a resurrection of Full Throttle, the click and collect adventure created by Tim Schafer and released back in ’95. No such luck, though it came close.

Via their Twitter, LucasArts announced this morning that they would be utilizing the Steam digital delivery service to offer up back catalog games beginning this Wednesday (July 8th). Right out of the gate, 8 classic titles (well, 5 classics and 3 modern hits) are being offered up:

  • Armed and Dangerous™
  • Indiana Jones® and the Fate of Atlantis
  • Indiana Jones® and the Last Crusade: The Graphic Adventure
  • LEGO® Indiana Jones: The Original Adventure
  • LOOM™
  • Star Wars Battlefront® II
  • Star Wars Republic Commando®
  • Star Wars Starfighter™
  • The Dig®
  • Thrillville®: Off the Rails™

And more are apparently to come. LucasArts has already announced a return to the Monkey Island franchise, coming to the Wii, Xbox Live and PC (via Steam). The first WiiWare chapter rolls out July 7th, Steam on July 15th.

Lots of future possibilities and all will be announced on Twitter. Darrel Rodriguez, president of LucasArts: “This effort is going to make it possible to introduce a whole new generation of gamers to LucasArts’ classic games. It also gives more people a chance to play our games by making them available long after they’ve disappeared from store shelves. We hope our fans are as excited as we are about our plans and we can’t wait to share what’s coming next. This is just the beginning.”

So look for more very soon. Maniac Mansion anyone?
