Conan Motion Poster Not That Big A Deal

This is less a comment on what I think about a new Conan movie without Arnold Schwarzenwhosit in it, but more a commentary on how dumb marketing execs assume we consumers are. The internets are all a-twitter (literally) about this new “Motion Poster” for the upcoming Conan The Barbarian remake on the horizon.

I’ll admit, it’s certainly more interesting than your average image and I’m not opposed to companies making better use of the new media out there, but would someone please tell IGN and MTV that what they’re doing isn’t some revolution in advertising.  It’s not a poster. It’s a GIANT flash banner that doesn’t fit neatly on a page. Instead it’s a sly way to make advertising the news instead of just accompanying it.

Now, when you start replacing the movie posters in the theaters with 27″ x 40″ screens with this kind of motion, and perhaps some interactivity (like  ones seen at the Arclight Cinemas), then you can brag about changing the industry.

Here’s the ad (and yes, I realize I’m spreading it even further, but content is content):
