Ghostbusters?

Back in 1984 Sony released the original Ghostbusters movie. The movie became one of their highest grossing movies of the year, followed by the decade. With the recent resurgence of interest in the franchise, Sony has hired writers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky to pen a new movie.

Sony has stated that the script will not be a reworking of the original movie, but rather a continuation of the series. Rumors focus around the idea of reuniting the original cast of Dan Akroyd, Harold Ramis, Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson along with director Ivan Reitman. The Hollywood Reporter states that the original team knows about the sequel, but that the new movie will focus on a new team of Ghostbusters. They might appear in cameo roles, but it’s all little more than speculation.

The writers are Emmy nominated for their work on the NBC Series “The Office” and have currently been working with Harold Ramis and Judd Apatow on “The Year One” due out next year. They are proven comedic writers, but I fear that the reemerging of the series might fall into the stereotype of past comebacks. On the other hand it could end up like the re-imagining of the Batman series when Christopher Nolan took over.

There is a Ghostbusters video game due out…eventually (the latest tells that it’s production is delayed) with all of the original cast doing the voices. I haven’t seen much on this yet, but I am kind of excited.
