Lord of the Rings Sweeps!
The Lord of the Rings won all 11 of its Oscar nominations, joining Titanic and Ben Hur for most Oscar wins. It also obtained a new record notch by Sweeping for the most number of Oscars. Previous record holders were “The Last Emperor,” and “Gigi,” each of which swept for 9 Oscars.
Not so shockingly, Lord of the Rings: Return of the King won for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Original Score, Art Direction, Best Costume Design, Best Film Editing, Best Makeup, Best Sound Mixing, and Best Original Song.
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World and Mystic River both brought home 2 Oscars each. Sean Penn and Tim Robins won for their roles in Mystic River, and Master and Commander won for Best Sound Editing, and Cinematography.
Charlize Theron picked up her first Oscar for her performance in Monster, and Sofia Coppola picked up her first Oscar win for best original screenplay for Lost in Translation.
