Raimi Signed to Direct Warcraft Feature Film
Press releases don’t often show up in our inbox at 10pm, and frankly I’m not checking mail till the next morning, so this comes as a surprise. Blizzard Entertainment and Legendary Pictures have signed Spider-Man director Sam Raimi to direct a feature film based on the World of Warcraft universe.
“At its core, Warcraft is a fantastic, action-packed story,” said Raimi. “I am thrilled to work with such a dynamite production team to bring this project to the big screen.”
Legendary Pictures will co-produce and co-finance the pic with Warner Bros. “Warcraft is emblematic of the kind of branded, event films for which our studio is best known. We have enjoyed great success with our partners at Legendary, and this is an incredible opportunity for us to work with Sam on a project that is so eagerly anticipated by so many,” said Jeff Robinov, President, Warner Bros. Pictures Group.
No cast or release date have been set. This is BIG news to anyone who’s even had a passing interest with the WoW franchise, but two words to the wise: let us not forget how another major role-playing franchise played out on the big screen (D&D with Jeremy Irons). Lest we also forget Spider-Man 3: The Emo Years.
Still, if producer Charles Roven’s taste and talents follow him from his success on The Dark Knight, this movie could touch upon Lord of the Rings territory. Here’s hoping.
