Spiderman 2 Shatters Records
Spiderman 2 opened to great acclaim at 12:01 am across the nation on Wednesday June 30th. With many special events around the opening, nothing was more spectacular then that at ArcLight Hollywood’s Cinerama Dome where Tobey Maguire made a surprise appearance to introduce the first showing in the historic Cinerama Dome theatre. Also, as you drive down Sunset Blvd. in Hollywood you can see Spiderman crawling over the Cinerama Dome spinning his web. I will have to take some pictures to post here.
Numbers are in and Spiderman 2 has shattered two major records. The first was the record currently held by Lord of the Ring: Return of the King for a Wednesday opening. ROTK opened to $34.5 mil last December while Spiderman 2 opened yesterday to an estimated $40.5 mil in ticket sales. The second record was for opening day gross, which was held by the original Spiderman at $39.4 mil.
“We are off to a phenomenal start on what looks to be a magical six days for Spider-Man 2,” said Jeff Blake, Vice Chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and President of Worldwide Marketing and Distribution. “Spider-Man 2 may be the best reviewed film of the year, and now it’s clearly being loved by audiences as well. Sam Raimi and the producers and cast have delivered a great film.”
