Star Wars on TV?
Lucas is on a hunt for the highest bidder. Not only is he shopping the TV rights to the recent theatrical release of Revenge of the Sith,
but the rites to all six films. The network that does get the rites to
this series could end up paying upwards of $50 million.
Revenge of the Sith
is the most recent, so it is the most valuable. Once it is done airing
on the exclusive pay channel, HBO it will be ready to air in Summer of
2008 to the highest bidder. The other two prequels, Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones,
make the deal pretty sweet too because they have only aired on the FOX
network so far. The original trilogy is not as attractive because it
has been shown on several networks over the years.
Several
networks have received letters from LucasFilm asking them to do the
math and decide on a figure that they would pay for this very popular
franchise. The highest bidder would be exclusive airing rights and that
could equal a lot of money since the franchise is soo popular.
This looks like just another way for Lucas to exploit his every popular franchise for the highest price.
