Atari Waxes Nostalgia Hard
Atari announced plans to reissue 85 of it’s Atari 2600 and 7800 games as Xbox and PS2 discs, in addition to marketing a shrunken version of the Atari 7800 console, complete with 20 built in games and 2 classic Joysticks.
The disc, dubbed The Atari Anthology is scheduled for a November release with a $20 price mark, whereas the mini-7800 unit, The Flashback, will sell for around $45.
Game rehashes are nothing new. Most recently was Capcom’s Street Fighter Anniversary collection, but Atari’s games come from a time before many current gamers were conceived. Atari’s CEO Bruno Bonnell isn’t worried.
“It’s a time machine. You go back to your childhood and you play [but] the kids will think this is quick, this is fast to understand, and we don’t need a manual to understand it. We’re going after two generations.”
Among the time capsules of code included are Crystal Castles, Battlezone, Breakout and even the prolific Pong. The discs themselves will have a few options not found in the systems some 20 years ago. Trippy Mode flips and cycles the colors on the screen for the games and other modes like time warp and double speed will alter game play in other psychedelic ways.
