Atari’s First Glimpse of Yar’s Revenge
There’s a distinct lack of Denise Crosby here folks, so move along if you’re sniffing up THAT tree, but if you’ve got a bug up your but about the old Atari 2600 game and its journey to the 21st century, this is for you.
Yar’s Revenge was arguably one of the most memorable but quickly repetitive title found in the entire Atari compendium. It’s sound effects and graphics are almost iconic and anyone who grew up in that era would instantly recognize it as having one of the coolest, if not the most misleading, box covers of all time. This spring, it receives an HD revamp for the Playstation Network and Xbox Live Arcade as a rail shooter with a few touches of nostalgia (keep an eye out for her shield).
To be perfectly honest. I’m not all that impressed. This looks like an average Space Harrier or Panzer Dragoon knock off. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, just not unique. In this case, the player character looks very stiff and the weapon animations are ‘meh’ at best. I do appreciate the homage to the old game, what with the names of the enemies and Yar’s shield, mimicking the static-y rainbow effect from the original. I’ll hold out complete judgment until I can actually play. It’s got to have more play in it than the original. Right?
