Sega's Big Announcement – Matrix Online

Wednesday morning had Sega’s fans and E3 attendees waiting outside their hall at the Los Angeles Convention Center, eagerly awaiting their big news. Emails, trade magazines and their own website baited those who read the article with a surprise announcement. Some thought the Sonic creators might be venturing back into the hardware market with a new console. Others thought an exclusive partnership with one of the big 3 was in store.

Wrong on both accounts. Instead, a small amount of showgoers lucky enough to jam into the conference room were re-introduced to the idea of The Matrix Online and that Sega would be partnering with Warner Bros. Interactive to distribute and promote the Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game, set to release in Novemeber of 2004.

The game was nothing new though. The Matrix Online was announced at last year’s trade event, but without Sega’s involvement. Perhaps more of a surprise was the decision to guarantee a spot on the Beta test in June to those in the room that morning. Inlcuding the Media Geeks Team. Look for a preview of the game early next month. In the meantime, check out the videos and images of the event.
