Driv3r Review
No…that’s not an understatement. This game has alot to like. Its
clear that the developer spent alot of time and effort to make the game
look beautiful. But its clear the dollars for this game went into
over-hyping how great it would be. The time, effort and money, however
should’ve been spent on making sure the control was top notch. Instead,
the unfortunate player is greeted with a control scheme so touchy that
just the slightest nudge can make you spin out of control. The first
and only mode i jumped into was the Driving Games mode. And that was
enough to make me turn the game off. The goal is to chase an enemy down
and try to get his energy down to nothing either with your gunman or by
smashing into him. That’s a hell of alot easier said than done. First
off he’s faster than you are. Which at times is frustrating, especially
after you’ve shot out one of his tires. Second his car must be attached
to rails. Apparently the computer opponent can corner on a dime, while
you are forced to spin out even if you slow down next to nothing. Your
opponent is able to corner so well that he can actually turn in between
cars. Good luck trying that with your crapmobile! Third, the distance
guage. Because of the huge desparity between you and the computer, if
you happen to hit another car or a lightpost or some other blockade,
there is virtually no time to catch up. Fourth, the time limit. If you
are actually able to catch up to your opponent, good luck trying to win
before time runs out. Your opponent is just so much better than you are
that you’ll spend alot of time chasing him down only to have gameplay
stop because “You Lost Him.” In 10 tries, I was able to win only once
because the sloppy AI flipped over.
