Toy Story Mania – iPhone
Disney Interactive recently released Toy Story Mania for the iPhone. This game is based off of the Toy Story Midway Mania ride that opened at Disney’s California Adventures in the summer of 2008.
The game is a series of five mini games taken from the ride. In each level you use the touch screen in various ways to complete each round. By starting with the Challenge mode on Easy you are able to then unlock the next two difficulty levels as well as free play. By completing each level you unlock prizes that can later be purchased at the Prize Gallery. These prizes give you added benefits in each of the different games. In order to purchase the prizes you must earn tickets by playing the challenges. The amount of tickets you earn is based on your score for each stage of the challenge.
The five mini games include:
- Bo Peep’s Baaa-loon Pop – where you shoot darts to pop the various balloons. Just remember to shake your phone to reload the darts.
- Woody’s Rootin’ Tootin’ Shootin’ Gallery – here you are shooting plates that pop up on a western themed scene with suction cup darts. Just remember to slide your finger on the screen to reload the darts.
- Green Army Men Shoot Camp – where you target and shoot plates within a military scene.
- Hamm’n Eggs – in this level you get to use a sling shot to throw eggs at various targets.
- Buzz Lightyear’s Flying Tossers – here you get to throw rings around aliens and rockets.
Each level uses the various aspects of the touch screen which allows the game to have different interactions. This is a good idea, but combined with the repetitiveness and predictability of each level it doesn’t allow for much repeat gaming once you have completed and unlocked everything.
The application is available for download at the App Store on any iPhone or iPod Touch for $4.99. The Nintendo Wii gets a version as well, later in the year, with much more varied game play including Boom Blox-style throwing and multiplayer challenges. Take a look at our E3 preview here.
