Batman Begins: Deluxe Edition

“If you make yourself more than just a man, if you devote yourself to
an ideal, you become something else entirely.” I’m pretty sure that’s
what the DVD authors had in mind when they created this 2 disc Deluxe
Edition.

For those unfamiliar or those that missed it, BATMAN BEGINS is great
retelling of the only superhero with no super powers. Director Chris
Nolan’s BATMAN BEGINS shows how the Bruce Wayne went from boy to man to
vigilante dressed as a bat, in a more realistic way then the previous
incarnations of BATMAN’s origin.

With DVD releases becoming a
major part of a movie’s lifespan, the technical quality of blockbuster
films is no longer becoming an issue anymore. As can be expected, the
picture is sharp, vibrant and absent of video artifacts. The movie’s
audio, presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 is done well, however a DTS mix
with a bit deeper explosions sound FX would’ve been nice.

The
term Deluxe Edition is quite earned. On the first disc, you’ll find the
basics, the movie and the trailer. However, you’ll also find the spoof
MTV did for the intro to the 2005 MTV Movie Awards show. On the 2nd
disc, we’ve been granted 8 or 9 well produced featurettes (with decent
running times), giving you have the chance to learn about every aspect
of what was involved in making BATMAN BEGINS a reality. From building
early concept models of Gotham and the new batmobile, to the
on-location shooting in Iceland. One of the featurettes even explains
which graphic novels or which BATMAN comic they used to base the movie
from. Which brings me to the only flaw of this must have DVD. The 2nd
disc’s menu. The authors of the DVD decided that a comic strip of
showing a condensed version of the plot would be the best for the menu
system. Unfortunately, you’ll find yourself trying to find out what
your supposed to click on (if anything), other than the next page
button. While it’s creative and interesting, it’s VERY difficult and
cumbersome to navigate. If you wanna see the featurettes, just keep
advancing to the last page where it lists them all for you.

BATMAN BEGINS was the best summer movie 2005. The DVD is a must, but
the 2nd disc’s menu is what prevents it from getting a perfect score.
