Wii Sports Resort at E3 2009

The highly anticipated sequel to Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort, was on display and the lines waiting to play it were huge. I finally got through on the third day after a 10-minute wait in line with the Star Wars Geek. While we stood there, we watched people play such games as Frisbee Golf, Ping Pong, and Fencing, all of which looked fun. They had the same simple game play that made the first game so addictive.

When we finally got to the front, despite the Star Wars Geek lamenting on how boring it sounded, we choose Canoeing. I suggested it since no one else in line had chosen it. He suggested that maybe there was a reason.

Canoeing was simple. You hold the Wii Remote with both hands in front of you (with the control pad facing your chest), kind of like holding a lightsaber at the ready. Then you make rowing actions on either side of your body to get your canoe to move. The faster and longer you pull, the further you go and the more you turn (in the opposite direction of which you paddled). Staying straight wasn’t easy, and we found ourselves crashing into each other and knocking each other off course. This was actually a good thing as, in the end, we found ourselves in a close race to the finish, yelling at each other to get out of the way and overall having a lot more fun than we ever expected.

I’m looking forward to seeing the rest of the games once they ship. In the meantime, maybe I’ll just pop in the old Wii Sports and go bowling.

FuzzyGeek

FuzzyGeek is considered hairy and dangerous. He is wanted by various government agencies, including animal control. If you see him, approach with caution or else you may swallow a furball.
