Modification, goes retail, then gets modified back to roots
What kind of sense does this make. Ponder this: Valve creates one of the most succesful first person shooters ever made, Half Life and makes a bundle. Talented artists, programmers and fans bond together to create an equally succesful and ultimately marketable modification: CounterStrike. Now, what kind of sense would it make for Valve to modify CounterStrike to play out the Half Life story and characters? None!
That’s pretty much what EA is doing though. Battlefield 1942 has coveted numerous gaming awards on the PC platform, including several game of the year and best online multiplayer awards. Players were forced to work as a team to capture or defend key World War 2 locations, using weapons and vehicles of the era. Fantastic game, great fun and very successful. Talented artists, programmers and fans got together to create numerous modifications to the game, changing weapons, locales and vehicles to suit different time periods. One such modification was BattleField Vietnam, create by EA working off the same exact engine BF1942 utilizes.
Now in a clearly money-grubbing move, EA plans to release a World War 2 modification for BF Vietnam. What?!?! Why?!? We’ve already got that game, it’s called Battlefield 1942. You made it several years ago. According to EA’s website the game won’t be a direct port, but will use certain enhancements that the original game didn’t have, but from the list of features, all they’ve done is added a flame thrower, a radio to play your own music and pulled all the models and maps from BF1942.
EA, you lose. Try an original idea! The MOD is due for release this friday, 8/20.
