PS3 could launch at a hefty $500

Only recently has the PS2 bowed to the pressure put on it from
competing consoles to drop it’s price from $199 to a more accesible
$149. Sony’s hefty lead in the console wars gave it more than enough
confidence that they could continue to see profit by staying right
where they were for an extended period of time.

Come 2006
though, will consumers be willing to drop over twice that amount for
the latest and greatest? The PS3 promises to sport standard gaming
console fair, strong graphics, sound and gameplay, but media center
functions as well. Digital video recording (DVR), DVD burning and
internet access have all been thrown into the Sony NextGen arena that
could push the PS2 successor’s price point to a whopping $500! Rumors
have revealed a possible multi-tiered product and price point, offering
scaled down versions of the console, but even at that, the PS3 will
certainly cost more than your average PC in 2 years.

Would you be willing to drop 5 big ones for another Playstation?
