Will of Steel Screenshots

Independent game developers are like independent movie makers. Most people have never heard of them or the fruits of their labor. Based in the UK, GMX Media is one such developer who has produced a whopping 36 titles in the last 3 years.

We’ve never heard of them, and frankly they don’t particularly shine in our eyes. Their website GMXmedia.net is poorly worded and certainly not fully thought out. One of their RTS/Sim games called 8th Wonder of the World actually describes the game suitable for ages 3 and up. Are British kids all phenoms?

Anyway, the newest title in their library is titled Will of Steel, a 3D RTS in the same vein as the Command & Conquer series with the added benefit of voice commands. Using an attached microphone you are able to call out commands to your battalion to attack, regroup, form up and other such actions using military terminology. How accurate these commands actually are is under scrutiny, since voice control has been sketchy at best, even with some of the more popular attempts by Microsoft and Logitech.

Below are a few screenshots. The images are decent looking with good use of shadow and a wide variety of unit types (check out the sniper), but the environments leave a lot to be desired. I personally found it rather odd that the images show a lot of blowing up and troop movement, but lack actual enemies! Where are the bad guys?

Oh, and I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention in Will of Steel, you play as William Steel…

Yeah.
