Connie and Carla

I’m sure that on paper, this looks like a great idea. Let’s take two Middle America homebodies with stars in their eyes, move them to California, and make them into drag queens. Then get them to fall in love with a guy who thinks they are guys, and just watch the audience roll on the floor with laughter. It is just about as formulaic as it gets. Girl meets guys, girl lies to guy, girl falls for guy, but can’t do anything because she’s lying to him.

This film had it moments. Unfortunately, they were too few to get me into the film. I thought about errands I had yet to finish after the film was over. A movie, especially a comedy, should be much more engaging than this. Even with drag queens and more gay jokes than an entire season of “Will and Grace.”

Writer/Actor Nia Vardalos (My Big Fat Greek Wedding) is a fantastic writer, and plays a wonderful real-world type character. She still has the talent to pull me into her world, but lacking this talent are her co-stars, Toni Collette(The Sixth Sense, Muriel’s Wedding) and David Duchovny (Evolution, The X Files). Duchovny is still too static and too stoic to play any role in a comedy. Director Michael Lembeck (The Santa Clause 2) just didn’t pull this film into a tight enough package.

If your buddy wants to take you to this film, for whatever reason, think twice about sleeping on his couch. Politely decline, and catch it on HBO.
